Creative Process

How We Create Your Art

A structured creative process that gives you full visibility and control at every stage, no surprises, no wasted revisions.

🔍1
Brief & Research

We deep-dive into your game concept, target audience, competitive landscape, and visual references. The brief is aligned before a single pixel is drawn.

✏️2
Concept Art

Multiple concept directions for key visual elements, characters, environments, UI tone. You choose a direction (or a hybrid) before full production begins.

3
Style Approval

A pilot batch of production assets, a character in full colour, a sample environment tile, a UI screen, produced and approved before the full pipeline runs.

🎨4
Full Production

Sprint-based asset delivery with weekly reviews. Every batch is reviewed against the style guide before handoff. No pile-up of revisions at the end.

📦5
Delivery & Integration

Organised file delivery in your required formats and resolution variants, ready for Unity, Unreal, or Spine integration. We can assist with engine import if needed.

Why Nine Pixels

Why Studios Trust Us With Their Visual Identity

Great game art isn’t just beautiful. It’s functional, consistent, and delivered on time.

🌟
Game Artists, Not Generic Illustrators

Our artists have shipped game art professionally, they understand sprite atlases, UV unwrapping, engine import requirements, and the difference between art that looks great and art that works in a game engine.

📈
Style Consistency at Scale

Maintaining a consistent visual style across hundreds of assets, multiple artists, and months of production requires process. We use style guides, pilot batches, and regular art reviews to keep every asset on brief.

📐
UI That Players Actually Use

Game UI needs to be readable at 60fps, clear under pressure, and beautiful at rest. We design interfaces that players understand immediately, tested against real usability principles, not just aesthetics.

Engine-Ready Delivery

Files delivered in the formats your engine needs, correct pivot points, properly named layers, sprite sheets, Nine-Slice assets, and source files organised for handoff. Art that imports cleanly, first time.

Dedicated Team

The dedicated team model was perfect for us. Nine Pixels assigned us developers, a 3D artist, and a QA lead, they felt like an extension of our own studio from day one. Our game hit 500K downloads in the first week of launch.

Co-development

What sets Nine Pixels apart is that they think like game developers, not contractors. They pushed back when our design decisions would have hurt the player experience, and they were right every time. Our retention metrics are the best we’ve ever seen across 12 titles.

Staff Augmentation

We needed senior Unity developers urgently mid-project. Nine Pixels had them onboarded and contributing within 72 hours. Their talent pool is genuinely impressive and the communication was flawless throughout. We’ll use them again without hesitation.

FAQ

Game Art & UI/UX FAQs

Common questions about our game art and design services.

Can you define the art style for our game from scratch?+
Yes, and this is one of our most common engagements. We start with a brief, explore multiple visual directions through mood boards and concept sketches, and iterate until we land on a style that matches your game’s tone, audience, and platform. The result is a fully documented art bible that any artist can work from consistently.
Can you match an existing art style from our game?+
Yes. We regularly extend existing games with new characters, environments, and UI assets that match the established visual style. We’ll request existing source files and style references, run a small style-match pilot batch, and get your sign-off before full production begins. Maintaining consistency with existing art is a specific skill we take seriously.
What file formats do you deliver?+
We deliver in whatever formats your engine and pipeline require. Common deliverables include: PNG sprite sheets (TexturePacker .tpsheet), layered PSD source files, SVG vectors, Figma component libraries, FBX/OBJ for 3D assets, and Spine or DragonBones animation exports. We confirm the delivery spec before production begins and stick to it.
How many revision rounds are included?+
Our standard engagement includes two revision rounds per asset at the concept stage and one revision round at the production stage. Additional revisions are available at a per-round rate. In practice, revision counts are low because we align on style before production begins, the pilot batch approval process eliminates most late-stage surprises.
Do you design UI or just the visual art for it?+
Both. Our UI service covers the full stack: UX wireframes and flow diagrams, high-fidelity visual design in Figma, production-ready exported assets for Unity or Unreal, and if needed, implementation support using Unity UI Toolkit or Unreal’s UMG. We can hand off at any stage depending on what your team needs from us.
How long does a full character design take?+
A single hero character with a concept sketch, approved colour direction, full turnaround sheet, and expression sheet typically takes 1–2 weeks. Simpler NPC characters take 3–5 days. More complex characters with armour variations, ability effect concepts, and multiple outfit variants take 2–4 weeks. We’ll give you a specific estimate based on your character brief.
Can you create animated UI elements?+
Yes. We create UI animations in After Effects, export them as Lottie JSON files for lightweight integration, or create frame-by-frame sprite sheet animations for Unity. We also design Unity Animator state machines for complex UI transitions. Animated UI, menu transitions, button press feedback, HUD pulse effects, significantly improves perceived game quality.
Can you help with App Store screenshots and marketing art?+
Yes. Store art is a standalone service we offer alongside game art or as a one-off engagement. We design App Store and Google Play screenshots that communicate the game’s key features at a glance, feature graphics, icon design, and promotional key art. Store art that converts is a skill separate from game art production, and we approach it as a performance asset, not decoration.
