How It Works

Hire a Developer in Three Steps

No recruiters, no CV sifting, no wasted interviews. We match you with the right developer fast.

📝1
Brief Us

Tell us the role, tech stack, seniority level, engagement type, and start date. The more detail the better: we use it to match precisely rather than broadly.

🔍2
We Match

Within 72 hours we send you a shortlist of 2–3 pre-vetted candidates with profiles, portfolios, and availability. You choose who to interview: or we can manage the process for you.

3
You Hire

Agree terms, onboard, and start building. Developers join as staff augmentation, a dedicated team, or on a project basis: whichever model suits your current need.

Our Vetting Process

Only the Top 5% Make It Through

Every developer in our network has passed a rigorous four-stage vetting process before their first engagement.

1
📋
Portfolio Review

We review shipped game credits, playable builds, and code samples. Portfolio quality and relevance to game development is the first filter: generic software portfolios don’t pass.

↓ 60% filtered here
2
💻
Technical Test

A role-specific technical assessment, a real game development task, not a whiteboard algorithm. Unity devs build a small gameplay system. Artists complete a timed asset brief. Engineers solve actual architecture problems.

↓ 25% filtered here
3
💬
Technical Interview

A 60-minute live interview with a senior Nine Pixels engineer or art director. Code reviewed live, architecture decisions discussed, and communication quality assessed: because great developers need to work with teams.

4
🎯
Trial Engagement

New developers complete a paid trial engagement on a real project before joining the wider network. Only those who meet quality, communication, and deadline standards earn a permanent network place.

Engagement Models

Three Ways to Work With Us

Choose the model that fits your current need, or mix and match as your requirements evolve.

STAFF AUGMENTATION
Extend Your Team

Individual developers who join your existing team and work within your processes, tools, and culture. You direct the work; we handle contracts, payroll, and HR.

  • 1–10 developers
  • Your tools and processes
  • Day-rate or monthly billing
  • Scale up or down with 2 weeks’ notice
  • No minimum term
DEDICATED TEAM
Your Own Studio

A fully managed team working exclusively on your game, with a team lead, sprint planning, daily standups, and regular reporting. We handle management; you focus on your product.

  • 3–20 person teams
  • Dedicated team lead included
  • Agile sprint delivery
  • Weekly reporting and demos
  • Monthly billing, quarterly reviews
PROJECT-BASED
Fixed Scope & Price

A defined deliverable at a fixed price with a set timeline. Best for well-scoped work: a game port, a specific feature, an art production batch, or a QA cycle.

  • Fixed price, fixed scope
  • Clear milestone deliverables
  • Milestone-based payment
  • QA and handover included
  • IP ownership transferred on completion
Why Nine Pixels

Why Studios Hire Through Us

Game development talent is scarce. Finding it, vetting it, and retaining it is expensive and slow. Here’s how we make it easier.

72-Hour Shortlist

Traditional recruitment takes 6–12 weeks. We send you a shortlist of 2–3 vetted candidates within 72 hours of your brief, ready to interview, not waiting to be found.

🎯
Game-Specific Vetting

General tech recruiters can’t tell a Unity developer who’s shipped games from one who’s done tutorials. Our vetting is done by game developers, we know the difference.

📈
Flexible Scaling

Ramp up for a major milestone, scale back during a quiet phase. Staff augmentation developers can be added or released with two weeks’ notice: no redundancy cost, no long-term commitment.

💰
No Placement Fees

Traditional recruiters charge 15–25% of annual salary as a placement fee. We don’t. You pay for the developer’s time at a transparent day rate, nothing hidden, nothing extra.

Mobile Game

Nine Pixels delivered our mobile game on time and on budget. Their Unity team was exceptional, they anticipated problems before they became blockers and the quality of the final product exceeded everything we had scoped. We’re already in talks for our next title.

Dedicated Team

The dedicated team model was perfect for us. Nine Pixels assigned us developers, a 3D artist, and a QA lead, they felt like an extension of our own studio from day one. Our game hit 500K downloads in the first week of launch.

WebGL

Nine Pixels built our WebGL game from the ground up, browser optimisation, game economy, cross-platform support, everything. Their expertise across both Unity and web deployment is rare. Huge commercial success and we’re building a sequel together.

Co-development

What sets Nine Pixels apart is that they think like game developers, not contractors. They pushed back when our design decisions would have hurt the player experience: and they were right every time. Our retention metrics are the best we’ve ever seen across 12 titles.

FAQ

Hiring FAQs

Common questions about hiring game developers through Nine Pixels.

How quickly can a developer start?+
Most developers in our network can start within 1–2 weeks of an engagement being agreed. For urgent requirements, we maintain a pool of immediately available developers who can start within 48–72 hours. Timeline depends on notice periods (for part-time developers with other commitments) and contract signing.
Do we interview candidates before committing?+
Absolutely. We send a shortlist, you review profiles and portfolios, and then you conduct interviews with the candidates you want to meet. We can set up the interviews or you can run them directly. You never commit to a developer until you’re confident they’re the right fit.
What if the developer isn’t working out?+
For staff augmentation, you can release a developer with two weeks’ notice at any time, for any reason. We’ll find a replacement immediately and provide a handover period at no additional cost. In the rare case of a serious performance issue, we can replace a developer within 24 hours without a notice period.
Do developers work in our time zone?+
We match on time zone overlap as part of the brief. Developers in our network are based across the UK, Europe, and selected locations globally. For roles requiring significant real-time collaboration, we prioritise candidates with at least 4 hours of overlapping working time with your core team.
Who handles contracts and IP ownership?+
We handle all contracts. All IP created during an engagement is assigned to you, this is explicit in every developer contract we issue. For staff augmentation, developers sign a work-for-hire agreement covering all deliverables. For fixed-price projects, IP transfers on final payment.
Can we hire a developer permanently after working with them?+
Yes, with a conversion fee. If you want to bring a developer on permanently after a staff augmentation engagement, we charge a one-time conversion fee based on their day rate and engagement duration. This is significantly lower than a traditional recruitment fee. Many of our long-term studio relationships started with a single augmented developer who was later converted to permanent.
What seniority levels do you cover?+
We place Mid (3–5 years), Senior (5–10 years), and Lead (8+ years) level developers. We don’t place junior developers: our network is focused on contributors who can work independently and add value from day one without extensive mentoring overhead. For very senior roles (Principal, Technical Director, CTO), contact us directly as these are placed individually.
Do you offer team-level hiring (not just individuals)?+
Yes. Our Dedicated Team model assembles a complete team for your project (engineers, artists, a team lead, and QA) who work exclusively on your game under our management. This is the fastest way to scale from zero to a functioning game team, and removes the management overhead of coordinating individual contractors yourself.
