What We Test

QA That Goes Beyond the Checklist

Most QA finds obvious bugs. Our QA finds the ones that damage reviews, the edge cases, the device-specific crashes, the performance drops on mid-range hardware, the progression blockers that only appear on the third playthrough.

We combine structured test case execution with exploratory testing by experienced game testers who understand how players actually behave, not just how they’re supposed to.

🧪
Experienced Game Testers
Our QA team are gamers first, testers second. They know what players do when they’re frustrated, curious, or trying to break things, because they’ve done it themselves. That makes a real difference to bug discovery rates.
📊
Structured Reporting
Every bug reported with reproduction steps, environment, severity classification, screenshots or video, and suggested priority. Integrated directly into your bug tracker. JIRA, Linear, GitHub Issues, Notion, or TestRail.
📱
Real Device Lab
We test on real iOS and Android devices, not simulators. Our device lab covers 40+ handsets including the most common low-end and mid-range devices where the majority of your players will play.
Fast Turnaround
Milestone QA cycles completed within 3–5 business days for most mobile titles. Urgent pre-launch cycles available with 48-hour turnaround for smaller builds.

Our Process

How We Run Your QA Cycle

A structured QA process that integrates cleanly with your development cycle, no disruption, maximum coverage.

🔍1
Scope & Test Plan

We review your build, define test scope, write test cases for all core flows, and agree a device matrix before testing begins.

2
Test Execution

Structured test case execution combined with exploratory sessions. All bugs logged immediately with full reproduction steps, severity, and media.

📊3
Performance Pass

Dedicated performance testing pass: FPS profiling, memory monitoring, load time benchmarks, and thermal testing across low/mid/high device tiers.

🔄4
Regression Testing

After your fixes, we retest every resolved bug plus run regression suites on related systems to confirm nothing was broken by the fix.

🚀5
Sign-Off Report

Final QA sign-off report: open vs resolved bug counts, test coverage summary, performance benchmark results, and go/no-go recommendation.

Bug Classification

Our Bug Severity Framework

Every bug we report is classified by severity so your team always knows what to fix first. Our severity framework is agreed with you at project start.

S1: CRITICAL
Game-Breaking

Crashes, data loss, progression blockers, or security issues that prevent players from continuing. Unshippable in current state.

• App crash on level load
• Save file corruption
• Cannot complete main quest
• Payment data not secured
Fix required before launch
S2: MAJOR
Significant Impact

Serious issues that significantly degrade the experience or affect core game systems, but the game remains playable.

• Enemy AI stops responding
• IAP fails intermittently
• FPS drops below target on min-spec
• Leaderboard scores incorrect
Fix recommended before launch
S3: MINOR
Limited Impact

Issues that affect edge cases or peripheral systems. Noticeable but don’t significantly impact core gameplay or player experience.

• UI misalignment on one device
• Sound effect missing in rare scene
• Achievement unlocks slightly late
• Menu animation stutters
Fix in next patch cycle
S4: COSMETIC
Visual / Polish

Purely visual or copy issues with no gameplay impact. Worth fixing for polish but no functional consequence if shipped.

• Typo in tutorial text
• Z-fighting on distant geometry
• Button hover state colour off
• Shadow clipping on specific angle
Fix at studio discretion

Why Nine Pixels

Why Studios Choose Us for QA

QA is only as good as the people doing it and the process behind them.

🎮
Testers Who Play Games

Our QA team are experienced gamers. They test the way players play, not the way developers expect players to play. That behavioural difference is where the most damaging bugs hide.

📊
Actionable Bug Reports

Every bug report includes clear reproduction steps, environment details, severity classification, and video capture where applicable. Your developers can act on our reports immediately, no back-and-forth for clarification.

📱
Real Device Coverage

40+ real iOS and Android devices in our lab. We test on the low-end and mid-range handsets that represent the majority of your player base, not just flagship devices where everything works.

Integrated Into Your Pipeline

We work in your bug tracker, follow your branching strategy, and align testing cycles to your sprint cadence. QA that fits your workflow rather than forcing a workflow change.

Co-development

What sets Nine Pixels apart is that they think like game developers, not contractors. They pushed back when our design decisions would have hurt the player experience, and they were right every time. Our retention metrics are the best we’ve ever seen across 12 titles.

FAQ

QA & Testing FAQs

Common questions about our QA services.

When in development should we bring QA in?+
As early as possible. QA brought in at alpha stage can influence design decisions that prevent entire categories of bugs from existing. At a minimum, we recommend integrating QA from beta onwards, milestone testing at each major build rather than a single pre-launch QA cycle that’s too late to address structural issues.
How long does a QA cycle take?+
A typical milestone QA cycle for a mobile game takes 3–5 business days for functional testing, plus 1–2 days for a performance pass. Full regression after a major fix batch takes 2–3 days. Pre-launch certification QA typically takes 5–7 days depending on the platform. We can compress timelines for urgent cycles, discuss your deadline with us.
What bug tracker do you use?+
Yours. We work in whatever bug tracking system your team uses. JIRA, Linear, GitHub Issues, Notion, TestRail, or any other. If you don’t have one set up we can recommend and help configure a lightweight setup before testing begins.
Do you test in-app purchases in production?+
We test IAP flows in sandbox environments first (Apple Sandbox, Google Play Billing test accounts), then with real transactions in production for final pre-launch validation. We cover the full IAP lifecycle: purchase initiation, payment processing, entitlement delivery, restore purchases, interrupted transactions, and receipt validation.
How many devices do you test on?+
Our standard mobile QA device matrix covers 12–18 devices for a typical engagement, a representative spread of iOS and Android devices across low, mid, and high-end tiers. We agree the specific device matrix with you at project start based on your target market analytics. Additional devices from our lab of 40+ can be added for broad compatibility sweeps.
Can you help with App Store and Google Play rejection issues?+
Yes. If your game has been rejected, we can review the rejection reason, identify the technical or policy issue, and run targeted QA to validate the fix before resubmission. We can also run pre-submission certification QA aligned to Apple’s and Google’s review guidelines to minimise the chance of first-pass rejection.
Do you offer ongoing QA retainers?+
Yes. Live games need ongoing QA for every update, seasonal event, and live ops content release. Our retainer model gives you a dedicated QA team at a fixed monthly cost, available on demand for milestone testing, patch validation, and emergency regression cycles. Retainer clients get priority scheduling and faster turnaround SLAs.
Can you test multiplayer games?+
Yes. Multiplayer QA requires multiple concurrent test sessions, network condition simulation, and coordinated testing across regions. We run dedicated multiplayer test sessions with multiple testers working simultaneously, test disconnection and reconnection handling, simulate poor network conditions with packet loss and latency injection, and validate leaderboard and matchmaking accuracy.
