What We Build

Immersive XR Experiences

AR and VR demand a different kind of design thinking. Spatial interaction, comfort optimisation, presence engineering, and performance constraints that don’t exist on any other platform. Nine Pixels has shipped across mobile AR, standalone VR, and PC VR, and we understand what makes XR experiences genuinely compelling.

From location-based AR games to immersive VR escape rooms and mixed reality training applications, we design and build XR experiences that work technically and feel extraordinary.

🧭
Comfort-First Design
VR comfort is non-negotiable. We design locomotion systems, field-of-view management, and interaction distances specifically to prevent motion sickness and maximise session length, tested with real users throughout development.
📷
Spatial Interaction Design
Hand tracking, controller haptics, eye gaze, and voice input, we design interactions that feel native to each XR platform rather than porting 2D game mechanics into 3D space.
📊
XR Performance Engineering
72fps minimum on standalone VR: 90fps target. We profile aggressively, use foveated rendering, and apply platform-specific GPU optimisations to hit framerate targets that make the difference between presence and discomfort.
📍
Location-Based & Social AR
GPS-anchored AR experiences, multiplayer AR with shared world state, and location-based games that bring players into the physical world, built with AR Foundation, Mapbox, and Niantic Lightship.

Why Nine Pixels

Why Studios Choose Us for XR Development

XR requires a different depth of expertise. Here’s ours.

🧭
Comfort Is a Design Discipline

We treat VR comfort as a primary design constraint from day one, not a QA checkbox at the end. Locomotion system selection, vignetting, acceleration curves, and interaction distances are all designed to prevent discomfort across a wide range of players.

📊
XR Performance Expertise

72fps minimum. 90fps target. We know exactly how to hit VR framerate requirements, foveated rendering, draw call budgets, dynamic resolution scaling, and platform-specific GPU techniques that keep the experience smooth without compromising visuals.

📷
Platform-Native Interaction

We design interactions that feel native to each XR platform, using hand tracking correctly on Quest, adaptive triggers on PSVR2, and LiDAR depth sensing on iPhone. The interaction model is designed for the hardware, not ported from a 2D game.

Platform Certification Experience

We hold active developer accounts with Meta, Sony, and Microsoft and have direct experience with Meta Store, PSVR2, and HoloLens certification processes. We build to platform requirements from the start and have an excellent first-pass cert rate.

Co-development

What sets Nine Pixels apart is that they think like game developers, not contractors. They pushed back when our design decisions would have hurt the player experience, and they were right every time. Our retention metrics are the best we’ve ever seen across 12 titles.

FAQ

AR & VR Development FAQs

Common questions about our XR development services.

Which VR headset should we target first?+
For most game projects, Meta Quest is the right first target, it has the largest installed VR user base, a well-established store, and a standalone form factor that removes the PC barrier. PSVR2 is worth targeting if your game has a natural console audience. SteamVR is best for experiences that require maximum visual quality and a PC-connected audience. We’ll recommend the best starting platform for your specific game and budget.
How do you prevent motion sickness in VR games?+
Motion sickness prevention starts in the design phase. We choose locomotion systems (teleport, smooth with vignette, comfort mode options) appropriate to the game genre, maintain locked 72fps minimum, design interaction distances for arm-length comfort, and avoid acceleration/deceleration that doesn’t match visual movement. We test with real users throughout development, not just developers who have VR legs.
What is the difference between AR and MR?+
Augmented Reality (AR) overlays digital content on a camera feed, typically on a phone screen. Mixed Reality (MR) blends digital content into a full passthrough view of the real world with spatial understanding, digital objects appear to sit on your desk, on your floor, anchored to real surfaces. Meta Quest 3’s colour passthrough enables true MR. The difference matters for design: MR allows physical interaction metaphors that AR on a phone screen can’t match.
Can you build multiplayer VR games?+
Yes. Multiplayer VR requires careful architecture, avatar representation, voice chat, hand tracking synchronisation, and social interaction design are all more complex in VR than in flat games. We use Photon Fusion, Normcore, or Meta’s social platform APIs depending on the project requirements. We’ve shipped social VR experiences for multiple headsets.
How much does a VR game cost to develop?+
A focused single-player VR experience for Meta Quest typically starts from £40k–£80k for a well-scoped casual title. A more complex VR game with multiplayer, progression systems, and cross-platform support (Quest + PSVR2) typically starts from £100k+. We provide a detailed fixed-price quote after a discovery call and design discussion. VR has specific development overhead that flat game costs don’t reflect.
Do you develop for both iOS and Android AR?+
Yes. We use Unity’s AR Foundation framework which targets both ARKit (iOS) and ARCore (Android) from a single codebase. Platform-specific features (LiDAR depth sensing on iPhone, ARCore Geospatial API on Android) are implemented as optional enhancements. We test on a wide range of iOS and Android devices so AR tracking holds up across the device spectrum.
Can you build location-based AR games like Pokémon GO?+
Yes. Location-based AR uses GPS anchoring, geofencing, and points of interest to place game content in the real world. We build with Niantic Lightship (the same platform behind Pokémon GO), Mapbox for mapping, and AR Foundation for the camera overlay. We can add multiplayer shared-world state, leaderboards, and live events to location-based games.
Do you handle Meta Store and platform certification?+
Yes. We manage the full Meta Store submission process including the technical review, comfort rating assessment, age rating, store page assets, and any revision requests from Meta’s review team. We also handle PSVR2 certification with Sony and SteamVR submission. Platform certification for XR has specific requirements we know well from direct experience.
