How We Deliver Your 2D Art

A clear pipeline with full visibility at every stage, and no late-stage revision surprises.

🔍1
Brief & Research

We review your game concept, references, and technical specs. Animation states, asset lists, and delivery format all agreed before work begins.

✏️2
Concept Art

2–3 visual directions explored for key characters and environments. You select the direction before any production art is created.

3
Style Approval

A pilot batch, one complete character with full animation set plus one environment sample, approved before the full pipeline starts.

🎨4
Full Production

Weekly asset batches reviewed against the style guide. Revisions resolved each sprint, no pile-up at the end of the project.

📦5
Delivery & Integration

Sprite sheets, Spine exports, and source files organised to your engine’s conventions, ready to import immediately.

Why Nine Pixels

Why Studios Trust Us With Their 2D Art

Art for games is different from art for any other medium. Here’s how we approach it.

🎮
Game-Ready from Day One

Our 2D artists know how games work. Pivot points, sprite atlas packing, power-of-two textures, assets arrive import-ready, not requiring rework by your tech team.

📈
Style Consistency at Scale

We maintain visual consistency across hundreds of assets through documented style guides, pilot batch approval, and weekly review cycles. No drift, no off-brand assets.

🎭
Animation That Feels Alive

We think about weight, follow-through, anticipation, and timing, not just frame counts. Animation built on the 12 principles creates characters players remember.

Fast Turnaround When It Counts

Seasonal event assets, store refresh art, and last-minute additions, we maintain reserve capacity for fast-turnaround requests from clients on ongoing retainers.

Mobile Game

Nine Pixels delivered our mobile game on time and on budget. Their Unity team was exceptional, they anticipated problems before they became blockers and the quality of the final product exceeded everything we had scoped. We’re already in talks for our next title.

Dedicated Team

The dedicated team model was perfect for us. Nine Pixels assigned us developers, a 3D artist, and a QA lead, they felt like an extension of our own studio from day one. Our game hit 500K downloads in the first week of launch.

WebGL

Nine Pixels built our WebGL game from the ground up, browser optimisation, game economy, cross-platform support, everything. Their expertise across both Unity and web deployment is rare. Huge commercial success and we’re building a sequel together.

Co-development

What sets Nine Pixels apart is that they think like game developers, not contractors. They pushed back when our design decisions would have hurt the player experience, and they were right every time. Our retention metrics are the best we’ve ever seen across 12 titles.

Staff Augmentation

We needed senior Unity developers urgently mid-project. Nine Pixels had them onboarded and contributing within 72 hours. Their talent pool is genuinely impressive and the communication was flawless throughout. We’ll use them again without hesitation.

FAQ

2D Art & Animation FAQs

Common questions about our 2D art and animation services.

Spine 2D or frame-by-frame, which should we use?+
Spine 2D is better for characters with many animation states or where memory matters. Frame-by-frame is better for maximum expressiveness, especially pixel art or hero animations. We’ll recommend the right approach based on your game’s specific needs.
What animation states do you include per character?+
Our standard set includes: idle, walk, run, jump (up/apex/fall), attack (2–3 variations), hurt, and death. Additional states, dash, block, special abilities, emotes, are scoped and priced separately. We agree the full state list before production begins.
What sprite sheet formats do you deliver?+
We deliver in whatever format your engine requires: TexturePacker .tpsheet with PNG atlas for Unity, individual PNG sequences, Spine .skel + .atlas exports, and layered PSD source files. We confirm the delivery spec with your tech team before production and test imports ourselves before handoff.
Can you match the art style of our existing game?+
Yes. Style-matching is one of our most common requests. We request source files and existing references, run a small style-match pilot batch, and get your approval before full production begins.
How long does it take to animate a full character?+
A complete Spine 2D rig with 8–10 animation states typically takes 2–3 weeks. Frame-by-frame at the same state count takes 3–5 weeks depending on frame rate and complexity. We’ll give a specific estimate based on your character brief.
Do you handle VFX and particle effects?+
Yes. We create 2D VFX as sprite sheet sequences or Spine particle emitter setups. Common packages include: ability effects, hit sparks, explosions, environmental ambience, and UI feedback effects. VFX is typically scoped as a separate package alongside character art.
Can you produce large volumes of assets for a mobile game?+
Yes. We regularly handle large-volume production for mobile games, idle games, match-3, and city builders with hundreds of asset variants. We scale team size to meet delivery targets and maintain consistency through documented guides and review cycles.
Do you work in pixel art?+
Yes, pixel art is one of our specialisms. We work in Aseprite and Photoshop at any resolution. We follow strict colour palette discipline, consistent lighting angles, and sub-pixel animation techniques. Our pixel artists have shipped for indie platformers, retro RPGs, and mobile games.
